Year-Round Programs
The Jacobs School of Music offers a wide variety of ongoing music classes for children and young adults. For program information, please follow the links below. For information about our summer academies please click on Summer Academies 2009
Sessions: Fall, Spring and Summer The pre-college ballet program is committed to creating a positive and stimulating environment for children learning to dance. In order to enhance each child's love and appreciation for the art of dance, classes are designed to challenge as well as encourage each student to achieve his or her personal best. Ages: 3-18
Sessions: Fall and Spring semesters only The mission of the IU Children's Choir
is to teach young people to value and experience singing through musical
activities that inspire musical ability, self-expression, and personal
growth. The goal is a lifelong appreciation of fine music. Auditions are
held in the first week of the fall and spring semesters.
Ages: 5-18
Sessions: Fall, Spring and Summer Students are paired with classically
trained professional musicians to learn guitar in both a one-on-one and
group setting. The program is designed to establish a strong musical and
technical foundation for playing guitar, and students get to jump in and
play immediately after the first lesson. Beginning students will acquire
basic technique using familiar tunes that correspond with their age. IU
staff is available to accompany parents to music shops and help choose
the right instrument for their children. Ages: 5-18
The Harp program is open to students
with no previous musical training, though 1-2 years of piano and a sense
of humor are highly recommended. An interview is necessary prior to acceptance
in the program. Harp students receive one private lesson each week, participate
in weekly master classes, and perform in a class recital at the end of
each semester. The program is directed by Associate Professor of Music
Elzbieta Szmyt, who creates an inspiring atmosphere of friendship and support.
Students must rent or own their own instrument, as the school can provide
only limited access to school harps. Harp rentals are available at Vanderbilt
Music Company in Bloomington, 312 S. Swain Ave, phone number 333-5255.
Vanderbilt offers a wide range of pedal and non-pedal harps, as well as
all necessary music and accessories. Ages: 6-18 Musical Beginnings is an early childhood
music and movement program that invites children from birth through preschool to
experience the world around them through singing, movement, listening, playing,
and creating music. The classes offer developmentally appropriate activities
that help awaken and develop a child's innate joy and musical ability. Studies
have shown that early childhood--a time of rapid growth and brain development--is
the optimal time to start this musical journey. In addition to being a time for
joyful music-making, these classes lay a solid foundation for future musical
experiences such as choir, piano, and other instrument lessons. Contact: Brent Gault, Director [send e-mail] Phone: (812) 855-7993 Web: www.music.indiana.edu/special_programs/mb Back to top Sessions: Fall, Spring and Summer Also available are Saturday morning

have been enrolled in Young Pianists for at least one term are eligible

Academy residential program) Sessions: Fall, Spring and Summer The String Academy offers private and
group lessons in violin, viola, cello, and double bass through a curriculum
that includes master classes based on the methods and philosophies of Mimi
Zweig (the program's director), Suzuki, and Rolland. Beginning students
participate weekly in both a private and a group lesson. Parents are urged
to support and encourage the students at lessons and in daily practice. The premier group of the IU String
Academy is the Violin Virtuosi, a collection of 20 violinists between the
ages of 10 and 18 who perform both as soloists and as a violin ensemble.
Many of the students have won local and national competitions and aspire
to be professional violinists. In February 2002, the Virtuosi performed
on the Public Radio International program, "From the Top," and last June,
the group performed a benefit concert for the Harlem Center for Strings
at Carnegie Recital Hall.
