In this course we will study the achievements of women in music throughout the ages.  Although a majority of the classes will focus on the works of women composers from the Middle Ages to the modern period, we will also discuss women as performers, teachers and patrons of music.  Additional topics will be gender and musicology, feminist aesthetics, historiography, and the representation of women in operatic works.  Materials for study will be drawn from scores, recordings and both primary and secondary source readings.  This class will be similar to a seminar in the sense that students will be responsible for regular contributions to class discussion topics and for giving a presentation accompanied by a written report.

If any student will require assistance or appropriate academic accommodations for a disability, please contact me after class, during my office hours or by individual appointment. You must have established your eligibility for disability support services through the Office of Disabled Student Services in 096 Franklin Hall, 855-7578.
