GRADUATE INFORMATION
Graduate students (master's, doctoral, diploma) in the Jacobs School of Music pay tuition per credit hour according to in-state and out-of-state rates set by the Indiana University Board of Trustees. In addition, graduate students are charged an $800 program fee and certain mandatory fees each semester.
Master's students may register for a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 19 credit hours each fall and spring semester (with an average of approximately11-12 credit hours). Every semester, master's students must register for 2 credit hours of major ensemble, which do count towards the minimum and maximum semester load. The 2 credit hours of major ensemble are free of charge, however. Depending on course selection, master's students will therefore pay tuition cost for 6-17 credit hours each semester.
Doctoral students may also register for a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 19 credit hours each fall and spring semester (with an average of 11-12 credit hours). Most doctoral programs do not require enrolment in major ensemble. Most doctoral students will therefore pay tuition cost for 8-19 credit hours each semester.
Diploma students are required to register for a minimum of 9 credit hours each semester. Like master's students, diploma students are required to register for 2 credit hours of major ensemble. Since the major ensemble credits are free of charge, diploma students are billed for a minimum of 7 credit hours each semester.
Graduate and diploma students may use the table to below to estimate cost (the table below indicates 2008-09 academic year rates. Some increase is expected each year). Please note that choices with regard to semester load will affect degree progress and timeline towards graduation.

FINANCIAL AID
Need-Based Financial Aid
Each year, students at Indiana University Bloomington receive more than $280 million in federal financial aid, including scholarships, grants, loans, and income from work-study jobs. More than half of the students in the Jacobs School of Music receive federal aid. (Please note that international students are not eligible for federally funded, need-based assistance.) The Office of Student Financial Assistance, located in Franklin Hall, handles all matters regarding need-based financial aid. The Jacobs School of Music is not involved in administering need-based financial aid.
Undergraduate Merit-Based Financial Aid
The Jacobs School of Music is committed to recognizing exceptional talent through merit-based financial awards. At the undergraduate level, merit-based financial aid includes the Dean’s Scholarship, Jacobs Scholar Award, Presidential Scholars Awards, and more. Each year, the school awards more than $5 million in merit-based funds. All applicants to the Jacobs School of Music are automatically considered for merit-based financial aid based on their audition, portfolio, or interview results. Students are notified of Jacobs School of Music awards by April 1.
For information about renewability, please consult the Undergraduate Financial Aid Policies.
Graduate Merit-Based Financial Aid
Merit-based awards, such as the Dean’s Scholarship and the Jacobs Scholar Award, are also available to graduate students on a competitive basis. In addition, a limited number of Associate Instructorships and Graduate Assistantships are available each year in various departments. These positions offer a near complete coverage of tuition cost and a cash stipend, and give the students invaluable experience teaching or performing other duties for their department. Some doctoral students may also qualify for the four-year Jacobs School of Music Doctoral Fellowship, which is designed to provide significant financial funding for a student over four years. The JSOM Doctoral Fellowship is tailored to the needs of a given department and typically includes three years of Associate Instructorship and/or Graduate Assistantship and one year of a cash award (fellowship year). Graduate merit-based financial aid is highly competitive, and all applicants to a graduate program in the Jacobs School of Music are automatically considered for all forms of merit-based financial assistance. For further information about graduate merit-based financial aid, please consult the Graduate Financial Aid Policies and the Jacobs School of Music Handbook for Associate Instructors & Graduate Assistants.
